Must-see in Ukraine > Ukrainian Subway Station Rated One of World’s Most Beautiful

Zoloti Vorota (Golden Gate) station of Kyiv’s subway occupies 11th position on the list of the most impressive subway stops in the world, according to BootsnAll. The renowned community of travelers chose 15 subway stations in the world with the most outstanding application of art, architecture, culture, history, and technology.

Zoloti Vorota is one of Kyiv’s most known subway stops, notes BootsnAll. The station was named after a historical structure – the ancient entrance to the city, built in 1037. The legend claims that the gold-covered domes of the Golden Gate were seen miles away from the city. Zoloti Vorota subway station opened on the New Year’s Eve of 1990 – on December 31, 1989. The station’s depth is 80 meters (262.5 feet).

The artists employed elements of the templesque architecture of Kyivan Rus while creating the interior of the Zoloti Vorota subway station. The images of ancient princes of Kyiv along with local churches adorn the cylindrical columns and the vault of the venue. Each column bears its own unique design. Moving clockwise around the station a visitor may acquaint themselves with Kyiv’s ancient history.

Large chandeliers with candle shaped light bulbs decorate the ceiling of the station. The floor of Zoloti Vorota station is granite. The design of Zoloti Vorota station comes off as quite authentic – it is difficult to believe the station was built only two decades ago.

BootsnAll celebrates the architects of the station – Boris and Vadim Zhezherin (responsible for the general issues of the construction) and Stanislav Adamenko and Maria Ralko, who designed the artistic elements of the station. G. Koren and V. Vitko created Kyivan Rus themed mosaics decorating the vault and white marble columns.

It costs only 25 cents to be able to enjoy creative design and ancient atmosphere of the Zoloti Vorota station since that is cost of the entrance fee at the Kyiv subway.

Other stations that made it to the list include Canada’s Champ-de-Mars station in Montreal, Taiwanese Formosa Boulevard station, Swedish T-Centralen station, as well as subway stops in Kaohsiung (Taiwan), Toronto (Canada), Frankfurt (Germany), Shanghai (China), Moscow (Russia), London (the UK), Singapore, Lisbon (Portugal), Pyongyang (North Korea), Washington D.C. (the USA), and St. Petersburg (Russia).
