Culture news > Three Ukrainian Soccer Clubs Go into Europa League Group Stage

Dynamo (Kyiv), Metalist (Kharkiv), and Vorskla (Poltava) won Thursday’s second legs of UEFA Europa League play-offs. Vorskla became the first Ukrainian team to make it to the group stage in the season of 2011-2012.

On August 25, three Ukrainian soccer clubs defeated their competitors in the second legs. Ukrainian teams will join other 45 European soccer clubs, which will go into the group stage draw at 13.00 CET on Friday at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.

Vorskla (Poltava) entered UEFA Europa League group stage for the first time in the history of the club. On Thursday, August 18, Vorskla won the first leg of their tie with Dinamo (Bucharest) in Poltava, Ukraine. During the second leg, however, Vorskla faced Dinamo’s tough play on their field in Bucharest. Ukrainian club started off with a well-organized defense, which lasted for the first 15 minutes of the game. By the end of the first half Vorskla’s Torzhe equaled the score by sending the ball into the hosts’ net. In the second half a 19 year old Oleh Barannyk scored twice into Dinamo’s net, and even the second goal scored by Bucharest could not change the outcome of the game. Vorskla defeated Dinamo Bucharest 3:2.

The second team, Metalist (Kharkiv) scored three times into Sochaux’s net 45 minutes into the game. Sosa and Cristaldo made two first goals only ten minutes into the game. The following two goals by Cristaldo and Tyson sent the French team into a knock out making the final score 5:0. Ukrainian club played 0:0 with French Sochaux in the first leg last Thursday.

Dynamo (Kyiv) defeated Litex in Bulgaria. The match started off with Litex’s attack, however, Dynamo’s goalkeeper Shovkovskyy managed to repel the goal. Dynamo gave Litex a few more chances to strike the net, but the luck was not on the hosts’ side. In the middle of the first time Dynamo overtook the initiative. By the end of the time Ukrainian club played a sophisticated combination Milevskyy – Brown Ideye – Aliyev – and back to Milevskyy. Even this combination could not break the score. Finally Milevskyy managed to send the ball, received from Aliyev, past Bulgarian Vinicius and therefore made a minimal win for Dynamo – 1:0.

Two other Ukrainian soccer clubs, which played on Thursday, Dnipro and Karpaty (Lviv) did not qualify for group stage. Dnipro won 1:0, defeating Fulham, however could not proceed to the group stage draw due to previous loses. Karpaty shared the same destiny finishing 1:1 in a second leg with PAOK (Salonika).
