A painting by a Ukrainian artist set a new record at the Phillips de Pury & Co auction that took place in London on October 13, 2011. The art piece “Horse.Night” by Anatoliy Kryvolap was sold for USD 124,4 thousand which is the highest a painting by a contemporary Ukrainian artist ever grossed at an art auction.
The painting was created in 2009 and depicts a horse standing still in the fading light. Dark, deep blue shades prevail the picture, in which only the contours of a horse can be seen. The mystic painting took the 6th spot in the top ten lots of the Contemporary Art Day Sale at the Phillips de Pury & Co.
Anatoliy Kryvolap gained popularity among Western collectors and is currently considered to be the most expensive Ukrainian painter. In May of 2011 the painting by Anatoliy Kryvolap “Step” set a record for the Ukrainian art after it was sold for USD 98,5 thousand securing itself a position in the top 20 lots at the Phillips de Pury & Co auction.
Anatoliy Kryvolap is an abstract painter who focuses on color as a means of broadcasting the impressions. The painter is sometimes referred to as the founder of a new Ukrainian landscape painting.
Other Ukrainian paintings featured at the October 13 Phillips de Pury & Co Day Sale included Viktor Sydorenko’s “Untitled from the project Levitation” (2010), Igor Gusev’s “Elvis Returns” (2010), Vitaliy and Elena Vasilieva “Untitled from the project No Art” (2010), and a painting “Hole” (2011) by an anonymous Ukrainian artist Taisha 3,14. The art pieces grossed the total amount of USD 177 thousand at the auction in London.
During the last several years a number of Ukrainian painters were presented at the world’s famous auctions by the top auction houses – Sotheby’s, Phillips de Pury & Co, etc. For the first time a piece of Ukrainian art appeared at Sotheby’s on June 9, 2009. The auction that took place in London was a specialized Russian/Ukrainian Contemporary Art event. The sale of 9 out of 19 works by the Ukrainian painters indicated a successful market entry.
