Feofania is a picturesque area in the southern outskirts of Kiev. There are holy springs, a cascade of lakes and mighty oak groves in the vicinity of the famous Orthodox nunnery. The unique St. Panteleymon’s Cathedral was constructed in the traditional Russian style. All visitors are amazed with its elegance and beauty.
The story of the St. Panteleymon’s Cathedral is unusual and dramatic. The St. Panteleymon’s Cathedral was built by Kiev architect E. F. Yermakov in 1912. In 1920s the Cathedral was closed by the Soviet regime. It was used a shelter for homeless children for some period of time. During the World War II the Cathedral was damaged. After the war directed action explosion experiments were conducted in the former Cathedral. Since the end of 1940s the monastery area was under control of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The first Soviet computer was designed in the cells. The works were headed by academician Lebedev. That’s why the street leading to the nunnery is named after him
There is also a wonderful archaeological and cultural site in the park. It is the hill called "Golgotha". There is a beautiful view of the neighborhood park and the Hotiv village from the hill. The results of the archeological excavations confirmed the fact that there had been a Scythian settlement in the 5th century B.C.
You will visit the St. Panteleymon’s nunnery, three healing springs, a holy font and the beautiful park which is considered to be the masterpiece of landscape art. Matter of fact the park is not inferior to modern European parks.
More than a century ago a little monastery farm was founded not far from the suburban residence where the bishop of the St. Michael’s Gold-domed monastery stayed in summer. Thus the history of another monastery in Kiev was started.
