|Mikhailovskiy Golden - Domed Cathedral||The Independence Square||Monument to Princess Olga|
We are going to see the absolutely different Kiev. That’s Kiev in twilight. That’s Kiev drowning in neon light. Any unnecessary details are hidden from our sight in twilight. Nothing will distract our attention from the main things. And the main things are the picturesque sites of the ancient and eternally young Kiev.
During the tour we will see the most important sites in Kiev: St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral, St. Sophia Cathedral, Golden Gates, National Opera of Ukraine, the main building of Kiev University, Kreschatik, Independence Square, Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, a monument to the legendary founders of our city – the three brothers called Kiy, Schek, Horiv and their sister Lybid.
St. Michael’s Gold-Domed Cathedral is the dominating building in one of the most beautiful squares in Kiev. The square is known as St. Michael’s Square. In 1911 a monument to Grad Princess Olga was unveiled there. It was made originally with concrete with some marble aggregated. In 1996 the monument was reconstructed but that time with some real Carrara marble. There are the statues of two monks Cyril and Methodius as well as of the apostle Andrew next to the Grand Princess. In the middle of the 1st century A.D. Apostle Andrew made a prophecy about god-blessed city Kiev. Our attention is attracted by Ukraine's Foreign Ministry building and the Diplomatic Academy. In 1993 a monument to victims of Holodomor of 1932-1933 was erected in St. Michael’s Square.
The monument to Bogdan Khmelnitsky was opened in St. Sofia’s Square in 1888. The monument is considered one of the symbols of our city. St. Sophia Cathedral bell tower dominates over the Upper Town in the ancient city of Kiev. For many centuries St. Sophia Cathedral was the main church of Kievan Rus. Vladimirskaya street was the same way known as the main street of ancient Kiev for centuries. There are many mansions built in the Kiev Renaissance style on Vladimirskaya Street. We are to be fascinated with the architectural ornaments over the façades there thanks to their spectacular illumination. The house constructed on the corner of Vladimirskaya Str. and Proreznaya Str. is considered the most beautiful in our city.
In a little city garden near the Golden Gate we will hear the story about cat Pantyusha, see some new masterpieces of "Kiev Landscape Initiative". They are a pussycat cut from the dried branch of a lime tree and a kitten made of single-use forks. There is a 19th century fountain in the city garden too.
In evening the main street of Kiev Kreschatik looks like some fascinating sea of neon lights. There are many picturesque sites at the Independence Square. They are Academy of Music, Pechersk (Lyadsky) gate topped with a statue of the Archangel Michael (one of the three patron saints of Kiev), the former Institute for daughters of nobility (now the International Center of Culture and the Arts is situated there). In 2001 in order to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine the 62 m big column crowned with the statue of a young girl holding a snowball branch was erected there.
We will visit the Dnieper River embankment and the monument to the legendary founders of our city. The monument was opened in 1982 when the 1,500th anniversary of the Kiev foundation was celebrated. That’s the way Nestor the Chronicler described the founding of our city in his "Tale of Bygone Years:" And there were three brothers: the eldest one was called Kiy, the middle brother was called Schek and the youngest one was called Horiv. Their sister was called Lybed. Kiy settled on the hill, where the Borichev descent is now. And Schek settled on the hill which is now called Schekovitsa. And Horiv settled on the hill called after him Horivitsa. And they built a city in honor of their eldest brother. And they called it Kiev”.
We will enjoy the stunning view of city nightlife from an observation platform near the Arch of Friendship. We are to see the Lower Town, the Dnieper river port and sleeping districts in the eastern part of Kiev situated on the left river bank.
